The tastiest since 1920

Matthijs has been producing licorice, wine gum and gum for 100 years and is still growing as a company due to its traditional and high-quality recipes. With a large customer base both domestically and abroad, Matthijs is becoming a bigger and bigger player within the market.

While maintaining optimal product quality, Matthijs wants to focus on increasing production capacity and achieving strongly growing sales in the coming years. Matthijs also wants to position its own brand as a reliable candy brand where quality has the highest priority.

How it started

On January 14, 1920, Walther Matthijs began developing his own licorice recipes from his home. He started with nothing but a stove and a large saucepan, admittedly with no money, but with a lot of passion. His father had been a sugar baker and from him he had learned a lot. Through much experimentation and evaluation, he built his own recipes.

Hard work pays off

The hard work soon bore fruit and two years later, in 1922, Walther's petition for the establishment of a bakery for small sugar works was granted. Matthijs BV was now officially born! Due to the quality of his products and the right sales channels in Holland and Belgium, the company experienced strong growth. This forced Walther to move to a new, larger factory named 'Matthijs Caramel-works'.

Dark days

Yet Walther also faced severe setbacks when the Germans shut down the factory during World War II and later destroyed the entire factory by shellfire. Walther did not let this put him off, and a new factory was later established. Walther, called Grandfather Bollekes by the family, worked together with his nine sons in the "bollekesfabriek. Together they conquered the market with Matthijs' licorice and made the company grow even further.

From licorice factory to candy factory

After the successes of Walther Matthijs and his succeeding son, Leo Matthijs, Walter Matthijs came to the helm in mid-1990. He soon had the ambition to grow Matthijs to a more international level. Soon the first winegums were produced, quite a step for the company which previously only produced licorice.

Matthijs continues to grow

Now, more than 100 years after its founding, the company is still in the same family, but we produce with the most modern techniques and in much larger volumes. A total of more than 100 different types of candy are produced for customers in Europe, America and Asia. He would feast his eyes on Walther Matthijs!
